If you’re in the job search process, you’ve probably wondered: “What do I include when writing my resume?” In this growingly competitive job market, candidates need to make an instant impact on hiring managers to snag an interview and land their next dream job.

1. Include key technical skills and your GitHub handle (if applicable).

Be sure to clearly articulate your technical skills like UX/UI, HTML, and CSS, SEO or WordPress. Yes, most technical candidates also have these skills but many forget to list them directly on their resume. It will help you stand out and easily show your qualifications for the open position. If you have an active account on GitHub and can show some work samples, definitely list them!

2. Mention extracurricular activities and volunteer work.

Showcasing your experience outside the office proves that you’re a well-rounded, dynamic professional. Be sure to include experience like volunteering for a summer coding camp for girls or creating HTML for a local nonprofit. In addition to personal experience, it also proves that you have a genuine interest in the tech industry.

3. Describe the impact on your organization.

Jessica Pointing, a Harvard junior who won internship offers from companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, McKinsey, Bain, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley, explained writing my resume tips for IT to Business Insider. She said that candidates need to include how you impacted the organization you worked for. Many people only describe their roles but it’s also important to demonstrate how you contributed to that job.

4. Provide quantifiable results when writing my resume.

Offer quantifiable evidence on how you made an impact when possible. For example, instead of saying that you saved your company and were an exceptional employee, state that you saved your company $10,000 in the first six months through strategically streamlining processes.

5. Showcase impressive courses over impressive grades.

If you achieve straight A’s in every course, that’s awesome. But even if you received a B in a challenging course, that will be more impressive to hiring managers over an A in an easy course. 7. Work experience trumps education in many scenarios.

According to a software engineer for Microsoft, work experience is really important especially for those senior-level candidates. If you’re still working on career advancement, you can always focus on your education and internship experience. Overall, when you’re building your career, a well-structured resume can make a huge impact.

8. Understand the job description and the company culture.

Job descriptions are the roadmap to scoring the role. You should pay attention to specific skill sets, responsibilities and culture indicators. For example, at Snapchat, hiring managers are looking for entrepreneurial minded team members. As a result, you should feature experience and skills that prove you’re an independent, self-starter.

The resume format and flow of information relative to the job also matters.  Having required/desired skills/tools for the job description well quantified both in the tech summary as well as explained in detailed experience portion of the resume definitely helps. Be able to explain the how your skills were used in detail with past positions to show your evolution through each role.

9. Be honest.

The job market is competitive, especially in tech, but that’s no reason to lie about your skills. Be honest, open and impress with your experience.

10. LinkedIn is important.

A well-developed resume is critical when searching for a role in tech and beyond. Many recruiters from the big four and other tech startups use LinkedIn to find qualified team members. Ensure that you’re using similar tips such as adding quantifiable achievements and showcasing volunteer experience when developing your LinkedIn profile to help you stand out.

When you snag the attention of a recruiter or HR manager and land a job interview, you’re on the starting track to a new position. According to Bock, employers want to know how you think to see whether or not you’ll be a good problem solver. During the interview process, mention your achievements and then demonstrate the thought process behind your achievement.
